Liverpool have submitted their first offer of the January transfer window.

It's the new year, and it's a new window. 2026 is here and that also heralds the opportunity for Liverpool to invest again.

Richard Hughes had a busy summer last year bringing in a lot of players and spending around £450m.

But what many others failed to realise is that Hughes didn't just spend and sign a lot of players, he also sold a lot of players as he overtook a radical changing of the guard at Anfield.

It means the squad is a work in progress. Hughes still needs to find balance and the right profiles. Part of the reason why Liverpool have struggled as a result is because there are teething problems.

This is not the finished product but merely the seed of something special that needs to grow and sprout.

In order for this to happen, patience needs to be exercised. January is an opportunity also for Liverpool to continue to grow and it looks like the club is going to be ready to make moves in the market when necessary.

One area where the club needs more depth is the left-back department.

It doesn't look like it on the surface because Andy Robertson is still there and Kostas Tsimikas is on loan. However, below the surface we know Tsimikas has no future at Anfield and Robertson may also be moving on with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.

This would leave just Milos Kerkez as the club's only left-back option and it looks like Hughes is trying to fix that.

According to the Daily Mail Liverpool have submitted an offer to Sheffield Wednesday to sign Yisa Alao.

The 17-year-old left-back is highly regarded and it looks like Liverpool are looking to bring him in for the January window.

Alao only turned 17-years-old in November, but he's already made his debut for the senior team back in August in the EFL Cup.

Since then he has also debuted in the Championship earlier this month, becoming the second youngest player to make an appearance in England's second tier this season, coming on against Derby County at just 17 years and 28 days old.

Alao is only a first-year scholar so he's technically still an U18 but he's been regularly playing for Wednesday's U21 side.

Wednesday are in a dire situation having been deducted points and currently sitting at the bottom of the Championship. They are in a financial crisis, which means this kind of money could still be massive for their survival, and that gives Liverpool an opportunity to swoop in.
