Ousmane Dembele scored a brace as holders Paris Saint-Germain dumped Liverpool out of the Champions League with a disciplined second-leg performance at Anfield.
The Reds were looking to mount a historic comeback but they failed to gain control early on, with PSG threatening as Ousmane Dembele blasted a sitter over the bar from seven yards.
Things went from bad to worse early on as Hugo Ekitike was forced off, though his replacement Mo Salah almost created the opener as his cross was turned goalwards by Milos Kerkez. Matvei Safonov made a great save, with captain Marquinhos producing a superb last-ditch block to stop Virgil van Dijk tapping in as both sides went in level at half-time.
But while PSG looked comfortable at the break they were quickly under pressure in the second half, especially as Alexis Mac Alliter darted in to win a penalty. Anfield was suddenly filled with hope but it was to be short-lived, with the initial decision overturned despite obvious contact in a decision that will bring more questions around VAR.
And it only got worse from there as PSG capitalised on the space left behind and Dembele wrapped up the tie, the Ballon d’Or holder firing in from the edge of the area to put the tie beyond Liverpool before adding a second late on to ensure the holders march into the semi-finals, where they’ll face either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in a blockbuster tie.
