The Andoni Iraola era gets underway in Tennessee

Andoni Iraola faces the first match of his Liverpool career this weekend, meeting Sunderland in Tennessee.

The Spaniard was signed as Arne Slot’s replacement earlier this summer following the Dutchman’s surprise sacking, and fans will now get a first chance to watch the new-look Reds.

It will be a much-changed side, too, with legends including Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson having departed for greener pastures after extended spells with the club.

Sunderland, meanwhile, enjoyed an impressive first season back in the Premier League and head coach Regis Le Bris will be keen to build on it.

While this is Liverpool’s first taste of pre-season action, the Black Cats have already been in action. They beat League Two side York City 5-1 earlier this week.

Date, kick-off time and venue

Liverpool vs Sunderland is scheduled for an 11pm BST kick-off on Saturday, July 25, 2026.

The match will take place at Geodis Park in Nashville, Tennessee.

Jeremy Jacquet is in line to make his Liverpool debut after he joined from Rennes earlier this summer.

Ryan Gravenberch, Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz were not named in the initial travelling squad for this tour but have since joined up.

Alisson Becker, Cody Gakpo and Virgil van Dijk have also joined back up, but initially reported to Liverpool’s training ground rather than joining their team-mates in the United States.

Stefan Bajcetic and Wataru Endo are both expected to be involved, but Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni remain sidelined.

A number of academy hopefuls have travelled with the first-team for this tour and will likely be handed a chance to impress.

Sunderland will not be able to call on Jocelin Ta Bi after his US visa application was rejected.

Brian Brobbey, Nilson Angulo, Habib Diarra, Robin Roefs, Simon Adingra, Arthur Masuaku, and Noah Sadiki were all involved at the World Cup and are set to report in camp on Sunday, so will miss this match.

So too were Granit Xhaka, Chemsdine Talbi, Omar Alderete, and Thomas Meunier, but they have been granted extra time off.

Liverpool vs Sunderland prediction

In this match, both Andoni Iraola and Regis Le Bris will be chiefly concerned with simply getting minutes in the legs and avoiding injuries.

The two teams will be far from full strength in Tennessee as they wait for World Cup stars to return.

Iraola, though, will be intent on making a winning start to his Liverpool career and his players should be able to deliver that.
