In the aftermath of Manchester United’s gritty 2-1 win over Chelsea, The United Stand’s Mark Goldbridge delivered a scathing yet reflective analysis in his latest match reaction. As always, the podcast was an engaging blend of opinion, passion and brutal honesty. Goldbridge and his fellow contributors didn’t hold back when evaluating individual performances or the broader direction under manager Rúben Amorim.
Despite the win, Goldbridge made it clear that he remains unconvinced by the manager’s vision.
“I’m still confused as to what the vision is, but I’m willing to accept sometimes you’ve just got to get a result.”
He criticised several tactical decisions, notably the substitutions of Bruno Fernandes and Benjamin Šeško.
“Didn’t like the Šeško substitution. Took Bruno off the captain when it’s 2-1 with 10 minutes to go.”
“We spent £68 million on a striker that he doesn’t seem to fancy. Against 10 men, a 6’4 striker to hold the ball up is a dream, and then we took him off.”
Goldbridge rated Amorim a 5.5, stating, “There were a few bad decisions from Amorim, but ultimately we win the game.” The sentiment was echoed by others on the podcast, with one contributor adding, “Arsenal was a much better performance from Amorim.”
The treatment of Šeško was a recurring theme. Goldbridge praised the striker’s flick-on, calling it the pivotal moment:
“We literally win the game because of Šeško. That flick-on changes the whole game.”
Yet the decision to substitute him bewildered the panel. “We’re ignoring him at times. It’s very frustrating.”
Casemiro also came in for strong criticism:
“Stop picking Casemiro in the midfield because he can’t be trusted.”
Goldbridge suggested that Amorim’s reluctance to remove Casemiro earlier in the game nearly cost United.
He also pointed to persistent issues in defence and goalkeeping:
“The goalkeeper’s shaky and you’re changing your back three all the time.”
“Midfield I don’t like. That’s not going to change. Goalkeeper I don’t like. That’s not going to change.”
While team structure remains a concern, a few individual performances earned praise. Goldbridge gave Emmo a solid seven:
“Very lively. Got the sending off. Looks really fit now… He’s massively valuable.”
Šeško earned a six but Goldbridge insisted that number belied his impact:
“That’s an asset. When you’ve got a player that you can hit a long ball to… we win the game because of Šeško.”
Goldbridge also highlighted Mason Mount and Kaoru Mitoma, saying: “Mount did okay… Ka – that was a brilliant run at the end to draw the free kick.”
However, not everyone escaped unscathed. Yoro received a 5.5 for a costly error, and Ahad was labelled “below average” with a 5.5 rating. Goldbridge’s conclusion was clear:
“Good result, but actually one of the worst performances I’ve seen this season.”
Despite his critiques, Goldbridge urged balance and perspective:
“Two wins, two losses, and a draw isn’t manager out time. It isn’t. It’s way too soon.”
He spoke of the importance of maintaining standards and not getting carried away by isolated results:
“Sometimes the analytical side of it is great, but we can go too far with it.”
There was a sense of cautious hope as he looked ahead:
“You go to Brentford and win. You go to Sunderland and win. Three wins in a row and we’ll be in the top five.”
In true United Stand fashion, Goldbridge closed with a reminder:
“Manchester United have just won. Put a smile on your face and go and enjoy the rest of your day… A win is a win.”
