New Grêmio head coach Luís Castro arrived at Salgado Filho International Airport in the early hours of Sunday, greeted by supporters and alongside assistant Vítor Severino, according to Globo.com.

They were met by club officials, including vice-presidents Antônio Dutra Junior and Juliano Franczak, plus Baidek, a Tricolor idol and friend of Castro. The coach spoke to the club’s official channels on arrival.

Castro said he felt honoured to represent Grêmio and highlighted the club’s stature, pointing to three Libertadores titles, a world crown, domestic cups and the Brasileirão.

The new staff have already been reviewing last season’s matches. During his two days in Porto Alegre, Sunday and Monday, Castro is expected to advance talks with the board over recruitment requests.

Castro and Severino will visit the Arena and the CT Luiz Carvalho before returning to Portugal for year-end celebrations. He will return for good on 2 January with his full staff to start the 2026 season.

Alongside Vítor Severino, the group includes goalkeeping coach Daniel Correia, performance analyst Nuno Baptista, fitness coach Nuno Cerdeira and assistant Pedro Mané. Castro is the first Portuguese head coach in Grêmio’s history and will be presented at 13:00 on Monday in the Arena do Grêmio auditorium.
