Luke O’Nien has outlined why Simon Moore is so valued at Sunderland after the club activated a one-year extension for the goalkeeper.

As reported by Sunderland Echo, Moore, 36, has rarely started since arriving but is held in high regard within Le Bris’s dressing room for his standards, experience and influence behind the scenes.

The move keeps the former Coventry City, Sheffield United and Cardiff City goalkeeper at the Stadium of Light as the Black Cats prepare for Premier League and European football next season.

O’Nien highlighted the importance of squad players, noting Moore did not feature this season yet remains a key cog who helps set the culture and connects the group. He added that Moore’s shirt has been in his locker all season as a daily reminder to emulate the veteran’s professionalism.

Moore made a handful of appearances last season and has provided experienced cover alongside Robin Roefs, Melker Ellborg and Anthony Patterson. Speaking after Europa League qualification against Chelsea at the Stadium of Light on the final day, O’Nien described Moore’s effect on the group as outstanding and said the keeper had sent him a photo marking the anniversary of their celebrations, complete with a flurry of selfies.
