Luke O’Nien has hailed Simon Moore’s influence after Sunderland activated a one-year extension for the 36-year-old goalkeeper. The move keeps the former Coventry City, Sheffield United and Cardiff City player at the Stadium of Light into next season as the Black Cats prepare for the Premier League and Europe.
According to Sunderland Echo, Moore has not been a regular starter since joining, yet he is regarded as a key figure in Régis Le Bris’ squad for his standards, experience and impact in the dressing room.
O’Nien said players like Moore find ways to contribute even without game time, describing him as a vital cog who sets the culture and connects the group. He even keeps Moore’s shirt in his locker as a reminder to improve and emulate those standards.
Moore made a handful of appearances last season and provided experienced cover alongside Robin Roefs, Melker Ellborg and Anthony Patterson. O’Nien’s remarks underline that his value is measured beyond minutes, with personality and professionalism carrying real weight in a young group.
Further praise followed after Sunderland secured Europa League qualification against Chelsea on the final day of the Premier League season. O’Nien said he could not fully explain Moore’s effect on the group, called him top, and mentioned a photo marking the anniversary of their celebrations, with plenty of selfies shared.
