According to Sky Germany, Sunderland’s option to buy loanee Lutsharel Geertruida expired on Wednesday and is no longer valid. The clause was understood to be worth around £19.9m.

The Dutch international spent 2025/26 at the Stadium of Light after joining from RB Leipzig last summer and his future remains unresolved. Sunderland’s retained list earlier this week said talks with the defender are ongoing.

The report adds that several clubs from the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga are interested, and Leipzig intend to sell him permanently this summer. After fresh discussions, Sunderland are back in the race but are seeking a lower fee, having allowed the option to lapse. No decision has been made.

He could use the upcoming World Cup as a platform following a late call-up to the squad.

During the run-in, head coach Regis Le Bris said he did not know whether Geertruida would stay next season, noting he would be with Sunderland until the end of June and that any outcome would be decided between the player, the club and another club. He made 28 Premier League appearances last season, including 17 starts.
