Lutsharel Geertruida has confirmed he will not return to Sunderland this season, describing his loan as a source of pride. The player said in a social media post.

Sunderland chose not to trigger their option-to-buy earlier this summer, and while talks continued with the RB Leipzig loanee, the club instead signed free agent Thomas Meunier on a two-year deal.

Meunier’s arrival was widely seen as ending hopes of a permanent move, and the 26-year-old has now drawn a line under a return.

He thanked supporters, team-mates and staff, expressed enjoyment of every moment on and off the pitch, and wished the club nothing but the very best. He also called his Premier League debut at such a special club a moment he will always value.

Geertruida made 30 appearances across all competitions last season. Though not always a regular starter, he was part of the strong finish that secured Europa League football next season.
