FC Bayern may have picked up another three points with a 1-0 away win at VfL Wolfsburg, but nobody seemed really satisfied after the game. Tom Bischof in particular was surprisingly open about Munich’s problems – and promptly received a public rebuke from Vincent Kompany
The 20-year-old was particularly unhappy with the first half, and in an interview on Sky, Bischof had strong words for the record champions‘ performance
„I think they could have scored five goals. That wasn’t good from us at all,“ explained the midfielder after the game. Bayern played well in the first few minutes, but then completely lost their grip: „The gaps were too big.“
Bischof also openly addressed the defensive vulnerability of recent weeks, saying that the counter-pressing in particular no longer worked as consistently as it did at the start of the season: „We just don’t do the little basics anymore and this counter-pressing immediately after losing the ball. We’ve been lacking that recently.“
However, Vincent Kompany did not take kindly to his youngster’s comments, with the Bayern coach publicly contradicting Bischof – and in unusually strong terms
„Of course I don’t agree with him. The young player made a mistake in that interview,“ the Belgian made clear
Kompany did not want to reduce the problems to a lack of counter-pressing. Rather, he saw the main problem in his team’s lack of patience: „It’s about not always having the feeling that you have to score three or four goals in the first ten or 15 minutes.“

The Bayern coach made it clear that, in his view, the intensity of the pressing was still right and that if the team no longer wanted to implement the processes, he would have recognized this long ago in training
„Then you can’t win a game,“ emphasized Kompany
In his opinion, Bayern lost control after a decent start because they were too hectic and therefore lost the ball unnecessarily. The team only found the right balance again after the break
Despite the success in Wolfsburg, the defensive problems at the record champions remain a major issue. In recent weeks, Munich have conceded a conspicuous number of goals – including the spectacular 4:5 against Paris Saint-Germain and the wild 3:3 against Heidenheim
The fact that even young players like Bischof are now publicly addressing the problems shows how present the issue obviously is internally
Kompany is unlikely to have been thrilled that the criticism was made public – especially right before the crucial weeks of the season.
