Mainz 05 sporting director Christian Heidel believes that their search for a new coach is already complete, with an announcement due in the coming days, according to Kicker.
Mainz currently sit bottom of the Bundesliga with just one win to their name. Former coach Bo Henrikson parted ways earlier in the week by mutual consent. Last year’s Bundesliga coach of the year has struggled to get his squad to adjust to balancing both domestic and European football this term, having guided M05 to the Conference League last season.
For the time being, the team is being taken care of by U23s coach Benjamin Hofmann. Mainz play Borussia Monchengladbach on Friday evening, with Hofmann expected to be in the dugout.
However, sporting director Heidel is confident that the club’s search is already over.
“We are very, very confident that we have already found a new coach,” explained Heidel. With this in mind, it’s clear that Mainz have contacted someone who is currently a free agent. What’s more, Heidel wants someone who will “have a different coaching profile than Bo Henriksen.” He continued: “It was about the profile we need in the current situation.”
In other terms, someone who has experience in fighting relegation.
As reported by Sky Germany, that person is possibly former Union Berlin coach Urs Fischer.
The Swiss national is best known for earning promotion to the Bundesliga with Union, before getting them into the Champions League and the Europa Conference League the following seasons.
Initial talks have already taken place with Fischer. However, other names are also on the list. However, regardless of the list, Christian Heidel is confident they have their man.
