Manchester City midfielder Rodri has been charged by the Football Association for misconduct following his comments about refereeing in his side’s draw with Tottenham Hotspur.
The FA is accusing the midfielder of acting in an “improper manner” by making comments that “imply bias and/or question the integrity of a match official.”
Although the charges do not specify which comments have resulted in the charges, Rodri questioned referee Robert Jones’ impartiality following City’s 2-2 draw with Spurs at the start of February.
The Spain international was angered by Dominic Solanke’s challenge on Marc Guehi in the build up to Spurs’ opening goal, which brought them back into the game from 2-0 down. The goal was allowed to stand after a VAR check, and after the match, Rodri questioned whether Jones was “neutral”.
“I know we won too much and the people don’t want us to win, but the referee has to be neutral,” he said in a post-match interview. “It’s not fair because we work so hard. When everything is finished, you are frustrated.”
He then added that he believed City had regularly been the victims of poor decisions by officials, saying: “It’s one game and another game and another game – and it’s not possible.
“Honestly, I never speak about referees, I respect their job massively. But they have to pay attention to these things,” he continued. “He (Solanke) kicked the leg, it’s so clear… It’s two, three games in a row and I don’t know why.”
He has until February 18th to respond to the charge.
