Manchester United are weighing a move for out-of-contract Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow as they look to reshape their goalkeeping ranks. The Athletic reports that the 35-year-old, a homegrown option, is being discussed at Old Trafford.
Darlow is set to end his three-year spell at Elland Road, where he made 38 appearances. United are expected to seek a new deputy goalkeeper.
Leeds would like to keep him, but uncertainty over assured first-team football complicates talks. Maintaining his place in the Wales set-up could hinge on regular minutes, and he is likely to want clarity over his role before signing.
Leeds’ list earlier this month noted both Alex Cairns and Darlow were in discussions, and the report added the club could enter the market for a new goalkeeper. It also suggested Darlow may prioritise a starting role next season, which could rule out Old Trafford.
With Illian Meslier leaving his position, options are thin, with Lucas Perri among the remaining options, though his future is uncertain despite a 15.6 million move a year ago.
Former Premier League scout Mick Brown has said Leeds want a new goalkeeper to lock down the No 1 spot, and that offers recouping their outlay for Perri could be entertained and reinvested. Braga’s Lukas Hornicek has been linked after impressing in Portugal’s top flight.
