Etihad officials are among five seven clubs who have the opportunity to trigger the release clause of one Bundesliga star.
Little surprise has come with Manchester City’s frailties in attack as of late as Pep Guardiola has relied heavily on Erling Haaland as his only native number nine since Julian Alvarez’s club-record departure in 2024.
As a result of that lack of depth within the frontline at the Etihad Stadium, the club’s recruitment team have frequently searched the market for options to bolster Guardiola’s alternatives in attack.
It is evident that Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy has big plans for the next stage of his career having matched standards required with 10 goals in 19 appearances for club and country so far this season, including a double against Villarreal in the Champions League.
Talk of the French-born Guinea international’s exit has circulated for months and although a January move is highly unlikely due to the 29-year-old wanting to finish the season strongly, there is a significant chance that he could be bought by a Premier League club next summer.
According to German newspaper BILD, translated and relayed by Sport Witness, the Borussia Dortmund star has a ‘clear plan’ in mind amid interest from Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal.
Outside of England, Serhou Guirassy has attracted further competition from the two greatest clubs in Spanish history, Real Madrid and Barcelona, while the striker has suitors in Saudi Arabia if he is willing to accept a lucrative offer at the expense of elite level football.
It is reported that the decision between sticking with European football at a different club in England or Spain, or moving to the Middle-East next summer are the only two scenarios that Guirassy will consider, meaning remaining at Dortmund is very improbable at this point.
There is a good chance City could succeed if interest in Guirassy materialises given the opulence of the club and stature of being this generation’s most successful team, winning the Treble in 2023 and unprecedentedly securing four Premier League titles.
In addition, other suitors such as Liverpool have plenty of pre-existing depth in attack such as Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, who alone could the club £125 million and £79 million, which could deter Guirassy if he believes his minutes will take a hit.
The 29-year-old’s ability has similarities with Erling Haaland in that he is a tall, strong and prolific finisher of the ball with out-of-possession intelligence too. He blends the traditional role of a target man while tracking back and playing deep to advance attacking transitions.
Whether a move to the Premier League would come too late for the striker, who will be 30 before he kicks a ball in England, is yet to be seen but for now City are expected to monitor the striker’s performances and take further steps if no other attacking options are brought in.
