It has become apparent as the 24/25 season has progressed that Manchester City were set to rebuild their squad. That process began during the January transfer window. The process simply had to begin based on how Pep Guardiola’s squad has performed this season. Age, injuries and fatigue have done a number on Manchester City this season. Looking at who the world champions have signed you get the sense that they have successfully begun their rebuild.

Manchester City brought in six players during the transfer window. Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis, Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzàlez, Juma Bah and Christian McFarlane were all signed by the world champions. Juma Bah will spend the remainder of this season in Ligue One with Lens. It isn’t expected that Christian McFarlane will feature in Pep Guardiola’s squad just yet based on his age. But Khusanov, Reis, Marmoush and Gonzàlez will form part of City’s squad for the remainder of this season. Based off of Manchester City’s January signings Pep Guardiola’s squad does already appear to be stronger for what remains of this season.

But Manchester City’s January signings also show that they have kicked off their rebuild. Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzàlez are all younger players with their best years ahead of them. Omar Marmoush is already entering his prime but he is still only 25 years of age. Each player promises to be a key player for Manchester City for years to come. The world champions needed to drop the average age of their squad and did just that in the transfer window. They also happened to sign three of the most promising young players in the game in Reis, Khusanov and Nico Gonzàlez. You could also add Juma Bah and Christian McFarlane to that list.

Manchester City’s rebuild is now underway. It is far from complete but the process has begun. The first building blocks in what could be Manchester City’s next era dominance have arrived at the Etihad. It will now be interesting to see who they aim to add to Pep Guardiola’s squad in the summer when City’s rebuild will continue.
