The first Manchester derby of the season arrives on Sunday with both City and United desperate for a victory to ignite their stuttering campaigns.

The rivals meet at the Etihad Stadium in unfamiliar territory, with City in 16th and United in 11th. United can take encouragement from the recent history in this fixture, with the away team having won 10 of the last 20 Premier League Manchester derbies.

  • Venue: Etihad Stadium, Manchester

Team News

Manchester City

Pep Guardiola has mixed injury news ahead of the derby. Omar Marmoush has been ruled out with a knee injury sustained on international duty, joining three others on the sidelines. John Stones is also a doubt. However, Phil Foden and Joško Gvardiol are fit, with Gvardiol in contention for his first appearance of the season. New goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is also pushing for a debut.

Manchester United

Ruben Amorim has been forced into making three changes from the side that beat Burnley. Matheus Cunha, Mason Mount, and Diogo Dalot are all unavailable for selection due to injury. The absence of Dalot is likely to see Patrick Dorgu start at left-wing back.

Form

Manchester City

City’s season began with a win, but consecutive defeats to Tottenham and Brighton have left them with Guardiola’s worst-ever points tally after three league games. This is the first time since 2004/05 that the club has lost two of its opening three matches. Despite the team’s form, striker Erling Haaland was prolific during the international break, scoring five goals for Norway.

Manchester United

United secured a much-needed first league win of the season against Burnley before the break, though the performance was unconvincing. That result came after a draw, a defeat, and an embarrassing cup exit to Grimsby Town. Manager Ruben Amorim’s side has been inconsistent, and he holds just a 16% win ratio against non-promoted teams in the Premier League.

Predicted Lineups

Manchester City predicted XI: Trafford; Lewis, Dias, Ake, Gvardiol; Rodri, Reijnders, Silva; Bobb, Haaland, Doku.

Manchester United predicted XI: Bayindir; Yoro, De Ligt, Shaw; Amad, Mainoo, Casemiro, Dorgu; Mbeumo, Fernandes; Sesko.
