Manchester City begin their pursuit of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday with a third-round tie away at Huddersfield Town.
After being knocked out of the competition earlier than expected last season, Pep Guardiola will want his side to make a statement and begin a strong run.
This fixture provides the perfect opportunity for Guardiola to rotate his squad and give valuable minutes to fringe players. Following a high-intensity draw with Arsenal at the weekend, a number of senior stars will be rested for the trip to the Accu Stadium, giving the club’s emerging talents a chance to impress.
Pep Guardiola is set to make wholesale changes for the trip to Huddersfield. The tie could provide a significant opportunity for John Stones to make his first start since returning from injury. The defender, who made a substitute appearance against Arsenal last weekend, could partner the experienced Nathan Aké in central defence.
City remain without the injured quartet of Mateo Kovačić, Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, and Omar Marmoush, while Erling Haaland is also expected to be rested as a precaution due to a minor back issue.
The rotation means academy graduate James Trafford will start in goal, with Oscar Bobb and Savinho also in line to feature, and Phil Foden could be handed the opportunity to lead the attack.
Manchester City predicted XI: Trafford; Nunes, Stones, Ake, Lewis; Bobb, Silva, Gonzalez, Reijnders, Savinho; Foden.
The Carabao Cup fixture will be played at the Accu Stadium on Wednesday, 24 September 2025, with kick-off scheduled for 7:45 pm BST.
The match will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Football in the UK. Coverage begins at 7:30 pm BST.
