Uruguay defender Sebastián Cáceres has defended Marcelo Bielsa after the national team’s early World Cup exit and fierce criticism.
As reported by yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Bielsa was due to leave after this summer’s World Cup regardless. Draws with Saudi Arabia and Cabo Verde, followed by defeat to Spain, ended hopes of a fond farewell.
After the Spain loss, Bielsa said he had given Uruguayan football nothing, arguing that any contribution over three years without positive outcomes was futile and that he would be remembered as having left nothing.
Bielsa has returned to Uruguay and plans to hold a press conference. He had snapped at a post-match interview that took too long to begin. Amid talk of rifts, Cáceres, who plays for América in Liga MX, spoke up, reportedly the only player on the same commercial flight into Montevideo.
The defender said he would not reveal dressing-room discussions but insisted leaks were untrue and distorted to make Bielsa look bad. “I don’t think that’s right,” he said.
Cáceres added that Uruguay conceded avoidable goals and made life harder for themselves. He expressed personal respect and gratitude for Bielsa, while noting others may hold different views.
