Marcelo Bielsa has reportedly confirmed he will leave his role as Uruguay manager after this summer’s World Cup.
According to a post on X, he told a press conference: “Our work culminates with the World Cup. I thank Uruguay for allowing me to enjoy a World Cup.”
Bielsa marked three years in charge earlier this month, having taken over in May 2023 after leaving Leeds the previous year. He has overseen back-to-back wins over Brazil and Argentina for the first time since 1959.
Qualification means a third World Cup for him on a third continent. He led Argentina at Japan 2002 and took Chile to South Africa in 2010, reaching the knockouts before Brazil ended their run.
Pressure has grown recently, with public clashes involving senior figures including former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez. Calls for his sacking followed a 5-1 defeat to the USA in November, after which he held an unannounced press conference, fielded questions for over two hours, and said his plans were unchanged with the focus remaining on the World Cup.
Uruguay are in Group H and face Saudi Arabia on June 15, then Cape Verde six days later, before Spain on June 27. The 1930 and 1950 champions aim to make a fast start.
