Marcelo Bielsa has reportedly confirmed he will leave his role as Uruguay manager after this summer’s World Cup, according to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk.
Bielsa marked three years in charge earlier this month, having taken over in May 2023. His tenure has included historic back-to-back wins over Brazil and Argentina for the first time since 1959.
Uruguay’s qualification ensures a third World Cup for Bielsa on a third continent. He led Argentina at the Japan 2002 World Cup, then took Chile to South Africa in 2010 where they reached the knockouts before losing to Brazil.
This summer’s tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico now appears set to be his final campaign with Uruguay. He told reporters their work would conclude with the World Cup and expressed gratitude for the chance to enjoy the tournament.
Despite early success, Bielsa has faced pressure in recent months amid public clashes with some senior players, including former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.
There were calls for his dismissal after a 5-1 defeat to the USA in November. Bielsa then held a lengthy press conference, answered questions for more than two hours, and said his plans were unchanged with the focus remaining on the World Cup.
Uruguay are in Group H, opening against Saudi Arabia on June 15, then facing Cape Verde six days later. They finish the group against Spain on June 27.
