Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca admitted that his side’s 3-1 defeat to Bayern Munich in their Champions League opener served as a reality check.
Despite the result, the Italian coach praised his team’s overall display, stressing that they competed well against one of Europe’s strongest sides.
The match began with Trevoh Chalobah, unfortunately, turning the ball into his own net, giving Bayern an early advantage. Harry Kane then extended their lead from the penalty spot, putting the Bundesliga champions firmly in control.
Chelsea found some hope when Cole Palmer scored in the first half to reduce the deficit. Kane went on to score again, completing his brace and ensuring Bayern claimed all three points.
Palmer thought he had grabbed another later in the game, but his strike was ruled out for offside.
Reflecting on the performance, Maresca told TNT Sports he was satisfied with many aspects of the display but recognised the turning point of the contest.
“Overall, the performance was quite good. We started really well and we were in the game.We just conceded a goal that killed the game. We were in the game. We scored, but unfortunately, it was offside.”
Maresca explained that his team must take valuable lessons from the defeat, pointing out that the standard of play in Europe demands complete focus throughout the match.
“We can learn a lot from this game.First of all, this game requires us to play well for 95 minutes, not just part of the game. For some, we were not good enough.”
The Chelsea boss concluded that while his players matched Bayern for long periods, the result highlighted the areas that need improvement.
When asked if the outcome was a reality check, Maresca added: “It’s a reality [check] but overall we competed well.”
The loss in Europe brings Chelsea’s unbeaten start in the Champions League to an end. However, the Blues remain undefeated in the Premier League and will hope to extend that run when they travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.
