Marino Hinestroza’s recent form has lifted Vasco, strengthening his case for more minutes before the World Cup break.
According to Globo.com, he shone in the Sul-Americana against Audax Italiano, then on Wednesday won a penalty for the first goal and supplied the second in a 2-2 draw with Paysandu at São Januário, sending Vasco into the Copa do Brasil last 16.
The improved showings have restored belief among supporters and staff. Signed for R$ 30 million, the 23-year-old had struggled early on amid anxiety and fitness issues, making poor choices on the ball and attracting criticism.
Coach Renato Gaúcho said he has been advising and polishing the forward, calling this Marino’s best outing for Vasco and hoping he gradually rediscovers his Colombian form. He noted mistakes are normal, cited the strong display in Chile, and stressed that opportunities are there.
Renato outlined simple guidance, asking Marino not to take on three players in midfield because of counter-attack risk, to resist markers and use power and skill closer to the box. He said such basics help if the player listens, adding he is taking care to shield him from a backlash.
Even so, Hinestroza’s numbers remain sparse, with 16 appearances, no goals and one assist, and only three starts. Competition on the flanks includes Nuno Moreira, Andrés Gómez and Adson, while David has been used through the middle and Brenner can play wide though is a centre-forward by trade.
Vasco visit Internacional on Saturday at Beira-Rio at 18:30, Brasília time, for round 16 of the Campeonato Brasileiro.
