Sunderland’s interest in Roma playmaker Matias Soulé is at an early stage, while Crystal Palace are reportedly set to win the race for free agent Oscar Mingueza.

According to Sunderland Echo, enquiries around the 22-year-old are being described in Italy as a ‘timid investigation’, with no negotiations, and the Argentine is not minded to consider offers yet.

The picture could shift later in the window if Roma recruit heavily in his position. For now, Sunderland are monitoring rather than advancing a deal as they prepare for Premier League and European campaigns under Régis Le Bris.

Soulé joined Roma from Juventus last summer after a productive loan at Frosinone. A left-footed creator, he has been viewed as one of Serie A’s more promising young attackers.

Sunderland’s model targets young players with upside, though any pursuit here looks complicated given the player’s stance and Roma’s situation.

Mingueza, a Spain international, has been linked with Sunderland, Newcastle United, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Everton and Fulham. He is now reportedly heading to Crystal Palace on a free after talks with a number of clubs.
