Artikelbild:Mbappe brace fires France past Sweden into World Cup quarter-finals

France swept into the World Cup quarter-finals with a commanding 3–0 victory over Sweden at MetLife Stadium. Kylian Mbappe struck either side of half-time, with Bradley Barcola adding the second goal, as Les Bleus dominated proceedings from start to finish.

Michael Olise provided two assists and hit the woodwork with a spectacular bicycle kick as France created chance after chance against an overwhelmed Swedish defence. Jacob Widell Zetterstrom produced several outstanding saves to prevent a heavier scoreline, but Sweden's attacking trio of Viktor Gyokeres, Alexander Isak, and Anthony Elanga rarely threatened. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from France v Sweden.

Winners

Kylian Mbappe (France)

Kylian Mbappe delivered a match-winning performance with two composed finishes that sealed France's passage to the last eight. His placed right-footed strike on the stroke of half-time broke the deadlock after cutting inside from the left, and he doubled his tally in the 74th minute with another precise effort into the far corner.

The France captain was a constant menace throughout, with his electric pace terrifying Sweden's defence. He had a goal disallowed for offside following a rapid counter-attack, struck the post from close range when unmarked at the back post, and forced multiple saves from Zetterstrom with efforts from various angles across the match.

Mbappe's brace took him to six goals in the tournament, level with Lionel Messi at the top of the scoring charts. His dominance ensured France converted their territorial superiority into a comfortable victory, with Didier Deschamps withdrawing him to applause in the 85th minute with the job emphatically done.

Michael Olise (France)

Michael Olise was the creative architect behind France's relentless attacking display, providing two assists that directly shaped the victory. His incisive through ball released Barcola for the second goal, and he delivered a perfectly weighted pass to set up Mbappe for France's third, demonstrating exceptional vision and execution.

Beyond his assists, Olise repeatedly tested Zetterstrom and came agonisingly close to scoring himself. His spectacular bicycle kick struck the crossbar in the first half, and he drew an exceptional one-on-one save from the Swedish goalkeeper in the 71st minute after breaking through on a counter-attack with the goal at his mercy.

Operating across the entire attacking third, Olise dictated France's offensive rhythm and created space for teammates with his dribbling and precise passing. His influence was so significant that Deschamps kept him on the pitch until the 85th minute despite the comfortable lead, recognising his importance to maintaining France's control.

Loser

Alexander Isak (Sweden)

Alexander Isak endured a frustrating afternoon as Sweden's attack struggled to function against France's dominant defence. The forward was largely isolated throughout the match, starved of quality service from his teammates, and when opportunities did arrive, he could not capitalise on them in meaningful fashion.

His early shot from the edge of the box was saved comfortably by Mike Maignan, while a promising set-piece delivery found him in the area but he could only touch the ball rather than connect properly. In the second half, his shot from inside the box was blocked by Dayot Upamecano.

Sweden desperately needed their main attacking threat to produce something special against superior opposition, but Isak was unable to escape the attentions of Upamecano and William Saliba throughout. His substitution in the 89th minute summed up a match where he was comprehensively nullified, leaving Sweden without the cutting edge required.
