Earlier today, Kylian Mbappe received the European Golden Boot he won for the 2024/25 season, after bagging 31 goals for Real Madrid in La Liga.

In a special event held at the president’s box at the Real Madrid facilities, the Frenchman was handed the Golden Boot by European Sports Media (ESM) vice-president Juan Ignacio Gallardo.

Mbappe interview

Following the event, Mbappe granted a special interview to ESM via MARCA, during which he touched on his dream of winning the Golden Boot and his targets for the future.

“Since I was a kid, I’ve always dreamed of scoring goals. Every kid who starts playing football dreams of scoring, of doing it many times,” Mbappe said to kick things off.

“In the end, it’s a very important award and it makes me very happy, but everyone knows that team achievements are the most important. I hope to win another Golden Boot in the future, but above all, I hope we win the league.”

Continuing, he added: “If we’re talking about why I won the Golden Boot thanks to my goals in the league, my goal this year is to continue in the same vein with the team. If we win the league and I win another Golden Boot, I’ll be even happier than I am now.”

On being asked to name his most favourite goal from the last season for Real Madrid, the Frenchman chose his first strike for the team vs Real Betis.

“I usually say the last one, but this time I’d choose the first, because it was my first goal at the Bernabeu. It was a special feeling against Betis, the first of many I hope to score in this stadium,” he said.

“It was a moment that marked the beginning of my story at the Bernabeu and left me with a very fond memory.”

Since his arrival in 2024, there has been a lot made about his ideal position on the pitch. But Mbappe insisted that he is not bothered about that and only wishes to perform well for the team.

“I remember that on the day of my presentation, when they asked me, I said that I didn’t care about the exact position. I’m a striker who can play in several positions and score from anywhere. In the end, I just look towards the goal,” he said.

“I prefer that others describe me. It’s the best way to describe me, for others to talk about me. My goal is to do my job and do it well, regardless of the position the manager puts me in.”

Mbappe arrived at Real Madrid after enjoying a successful spell at PSG, even though things soured between the two parties towards the end. On being asked to point the differences between the two clubs, the France captain remarked:

“They are very different clubs, with different histories. PSG is a much younger club, while Real Madrid has many more years and a deeper history. The culture is also different.

“Without a doubt, Real Madrid is the best club in the world, but PSG is also among the best. They are two different ways of understanding football, and I am proud to have been part of both Real Madrid and Paris.”

Mbappe managed to outdo Real Madrid legend Cristiano Ronaldo in his debut season, outscoring the Portuguese icon. On whether he thinks about usurping him as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, the Frenchman said:

“I don’t know how to answer that question. Everyone knows that Cristiano is the benchmark in Madrid, number one. I’ve been here for a year and a half, and he was here for nine years. I can’t compare myself to what he did; my path is different.

“I want to forge my own path, but being mentioned alongside Cristiano is already an honour. But I’m only focused on forging my own path, helping the team, and winning every title possible.”

Mbappe has started the ongoing season in brilliant form and his partnership with Arda Guler has been one of the major highlights. On whether he was surprised by the Turkish prodigy’s quality, he said:

“No, it doesn’t surprise me. He’s a very talented young player. He’s still young, but he’s ready to help the team. He’s started the season impressively for his age.

“He has a magical touch that the Bernabeu fans love. I just hope he keeps it up, because he can be very important for us, and I’m happy to play alongside him.”

Regarding his role in the team under current manager Xabi Alonso, Mbappe added: “I’ve had many coaches and I’m used to each one having their own philosophy and style.

“Xabi is different from Ancelotti; he has his own way of working, and little by little we’re understanding what he wants.

“You can see on the pitch that we’ve improved since the start of the season, since the Club World Cup, although we still have room for improvement. We haven’t won anything yet, but we’re doing well. We’re on the right track and we hope to win every title possible.”

When asked about the objectives he had set for himself this season, Mbappe remarked: “You know how I am. As a competitor, I want to fight for everything.

“You can’t choose just one goal. Of course, it’s going to be difficult, but I want to win everything and give my all in every competition. I’m not going to pick just one.”

Having scored 31 goals in his debut La Liga campaign, which won him the Golden Boot, Mbappe was asked if he had a specific target in his mind for this season. In response, he said:

“No, I never set a number as a limit. My goal is to take advantage of every opportunity to score and help the team. The more goals I score, the more titles we can win.”

“My priority is always to contribute to the team, whether it’s by scoring goals or doing anything else that allows us to win. That’s the most important thing, and I’m going to do it 100%,” he concluded.
