Manchester United’s pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo has turned into a saga, dragging through the summer.

Early in June, United made a statement of intent by convincing Mbeumo to move to Old Trafford despite interest from Champions League clubs Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United.

It is now mid-July, and the Red Devils have yet to strike and an agreement with Brentford for their talisman, who scored 20 goals in the Premier League last term.

Brentford play hardball over Mbeumo transfer

Mbeumo has been one of the league’s most potent attackers over the last two seasons, impressing fans and pundits alike with his dribbling, link-up play, ball-striking as well as defensive work out of possession.

Accordingly, the Bees are reluctant to lose their star forward and are understood to be demanding a fee well in excess of £62 million. They have already turned down two offers from United.

Regardless, Ineos have not backed off and are hopeful of making the 25-year-old their second major signing of the summer.

Manchester United hopeful of signing Mbeumo

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs remain locked in negotiations.

Romano adds: “Mbeumo still wants to go to Manchester United and the club remain optimistic to get the green light and sign Bryan Mbeumo in the next days.

“Still no breakthrough as of tonight, but United keep working, negotiating, keep advancing to find the right structure for the deal.”

It is believed that United are working on “easier and more difficult add-ons” to ensure Brentford are satisfied with their third proposal.

United are due to fly out to the US on July 22 for their pre-season tour. As such, the club’s hierarchy need to show some urgency and get the deal over the line for Ruben Amorim’s “crucial target”.

Amorim already finds himself in a tricky position with Andre Onana expected to miss the tour fixtures following a hamstring injury.
