The 43-year-old could only guide his Middlesbrough team to a 10th-placed finish in the Championship this past season, and that wasn't good enough for the club's hierarchy.

Concerns over tactical shortcomings and crossed wires regarding transfer strategy in the winter window also appears to have contributed to his Riverside downfall.

As a result, Boro chairman Steve Gibson is now looking for a new person to take the reins, and lead his club into the future.

Football League World takes a look at all the latest news coming out of the Riverside Stadium surrounding who might become Middlesbrough's new manager.

Almost immediately after the news of Carrick's Middlesbrough exit broke, Steve Cooper's name quickly became one of those being attached to the newly opened vacancy.

talkSPORT revealed on Wednesday that it was their understanding that the former Leicester City manager was in contention to succeed Carrick. However, that no longer appears to be the case.

Whilst live on air with talkSPORT, broadcaster Jim White revealed that Cooper was not in the running to take over on Teesside.

"My information is that we can discount Steve Cooper," White said. "The information I have is that it would be a polite no from him, in that he hopes to go abroad. He's currently a UEFA Technical Advisor."

talkSPORT have also since confirmed that information via their website's live blog on Thursday.

Jon Dahl Tomasson emerges as potential Middlesbrough candidate

Jon Dahl Tomasson's name has today emerged on the potential shortlist of Middlesbrough's managerial candidates.

The former Blackburn Rovers manager is currently in charge of the Sweden national team, having left Ewood Park and taken up that role in international management in February last year.

talkSPORT have named the 48-year-old as being on Boro's list of managerial targets via their website's live blog on Thursday.

Conflicting Robbie Keane reports emerge

A surprise name emerged as being a potential candidate for the Middlesbrough job on Thursday: former Boro assistant manager, Robbie Keane.

talkSPORT's chief football correspondent Alex Crook claimed just after midday that the 44-year-old is one of those in the frame to take over on Teesside.

This claim was taken a step further by a report from the Irish Examiner, who reported that Keane had in fact turned down the opportunity to become the new Boro boss, favouring to remain in his current post as the manager of Hungarian champions Ferencvaros.

Understandably, many Boro fans remained skeptical over reports linking Keane to Middlesbrough, given he was part of Jonathan Woodgate's coaching staff during the 2019/20 season that saw the club dance with relegation danger in the Championship.

It would appear those suspicions by many have been backed up too, as TeessideLive have today claimed that it's their understanding that having delved into the reports, that there is "absolutely no truth" in that one.

TeessideLive also claim that as of 14:53pm on Thursday 6 June, no candidate has been offered the job.

Rob Edwards linked with Middlesbrough job

Former Luton Town boss Rob Edwards has seen his name thrown into the ring in the hours that have since followed Carrick's departure.

The 42-year-old interviewed for the Middlesbrough job after Chris Wilder's sacking in October 2022, but it was Carrick who the club opted to appoint.

Middlesbrough's head of football, Kieran Scott, is known to be an admirer of the ex-Forest Green Rovers gaffer, with the two having worked together during their time at Wolves.

talkSPORT have today claimed that Edwards is also on Boro's managerial shortlist this time around too.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl touted as potential Middlesbrough option

One that would surely be a popular choice among many Smoggies given his impressive exploits in charge of Sheffield Wednesday, Danny Rohl's name has been touted as a possible option for Middlesbrough too.

Journalist Alex Crook has also claimed today that Rohl is "admired" on Teesside, but that his compensation fee that any club would be required to pay to get him out of Hillsborough may be a sticking point for Boro.

The Star have previously reported that compensation fee as being in the region of £5m, which is a significant amount of cash to part with for a Championship club like Middlesbrough.

Interestingly, TeessideLive have today claimed that Boro would be willing to pay a compensatory fee for a manager, but only if they were the absolute clear standout candidate.

However, given how impressive a job the 36-year-old has done with the Owls, it wouldn't be far-fetched to suggest that he would indeed meet that criteria.

Gary O'Neil among other potential Middlesbrough candidates

Gary O'Neil is one of a number of other names that have been mentioned in connection with the Middlesbrough job.

However, the appointment of the former Wolves boss would probably be a largely unpopular one among Boro fans, and not necessarily from a coaching standpoint either.

Indeed, O'Neil has previously confessed to intentionally being booked so that he could be suspended in time to watch the US Masters golf tournament in 2009, back when he played for Middlesbrough amid the club's fight against Premier League relegation - which they would ultimately lose.

Other names that have been mentioned among the bookies are: Tom Cleverley, Sean Dyche, Ruben Selles, Marti Cifuentes and Nathan Jones respectively.
