Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso has shed light on why the Tshwane giants featured in the Morupule Charity Spectacular in Botswana on Friday.
In a four-team tournament involving three other Botswana topflight teams, Downs dispatched Sua Flamingoes 3-0, with Thapelo Morena, Lebo Mothiba and Miguel Reisinho on the score sheet.
Masandawana went on to thump Morupule Wanderers 6-0 in the final, thanks to a hattrick from Iqraam Rayners, a brace from Tashreeq Matthews and a goal from youngster Gomolemo Kekana.
Reflecting on the tournament, Cardoso says it was an opportunity to give Dstv Diski Challenge [DDC] players a run in the first-team, hence the club accepted the invitation.
“The tournament was a good opportunity for us to compete in a moment that our championship stopped. So, since the moment we received the invitation I saw the highest opportunity to come here,” said the Portuguese mentor.
“We also wanted to give opportunity to some of the youngsters from Diski team to come and play with us and I think that objective was accomplished. So the team represented very well the club, we were well received.
"It was a fantastic day of football. We played two good matches, so I think the objectives that we had established for ourselves were all fulfilled.
Meanwhile, fringe players like Jody February, Sphelele Mkhulise, Tsiki Ntsabeleng, Asekho Tiwani, Reyaad Pieterse, and Keegan Johannes among others, also got a chance to play.
