Mikel Oyarzabal’s vacant stare captured the collective nerves as Pablo Marín approached the final kick, then relief erupted in tears, songs and hugs when it hit the net.
Earlier the Real Sociedad captain had made it 2-1 in the first half, then he left with severe cramps in the second. According to Diario Vasco, his look spoke for Gipuzkoa and Real supporters, as many in Seville and at home could not bear to watch.
Extra time and the shootout were agonising for him, inside footage showed Oyarzabal clinging to Remiro with his gaze fixed on nothing. Once the spot-kick was converted, team-mates sprinted towards the night’s heroes as jubilation took hold.
Ander Barrenetxea reckoned half of Donostia were in Seville and called it madness. The Croatians Caleta Car and Sucic embraced, Barrenetxea and Brais sang the anthem, and Marrero described it as a childhood dream.
Soler thanked La Real for signing him this year to live such emotion, while Guedes raised the cup in ecstasy. Marín said he felt calm when he stepped up, and Oyarzabal stressed he was happy with the team’s work and with what follows.
