The Milanese sides reacted with a joint statement on their official websites: “AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano are pleased with the City Council’s approval of the sale of the San Siro and its surrounding area: a historic and decisive step for the future of the Clubs and the City,” the clubs said.

“Awaiting the official confirmation of the Council’s decision by the City Government, the Clubs look ahead with confidence and responsibility to the next steps of the process that will lead to the creation of a new stadium meeting the highest international standards – a world-class facility destined to become a new architectural icon for Milan and a symbol of the passion of football fans around the world.”

Inter and Milan are planning to demolish almost entirely the Stadio Meazza and build a new stadium with a capacity of 71,000.

The cost to purchase the San Siro area is around €197m, but the worth of the entire project is circa €1.2 billion, to be shared between the two Serie A giants.

The first game at San Siro was played on September 19, 1926, and it was a derby between Milan and Inter, won 6-3 by the Nerazzurri.

It was initially the home of Milan, but the two Milanese clubs have been sharing the Meazza stadium since 1947-48.
