AC Milan are considering Ruben Amorim as a potential option to become the club’s next manager.

Milan are assessing candidates following the decision to sack head coach Massimiliano Allegri, following a failure to secure Champions League qualification.

Despite starting the season strongly, a poor run-in cost Milan a place in next season’s Champions League, with the club’s board describing it as an ‘unequivocal failure’.

“For the majority of this season, we were in the top two positions in Serie A, with a credible shot at competing for the Scudetto,” read a statement from American investment group RedBird Capital.

“The final stretch was completely inconsistent with the performance up to that point, with last night’s disappointing loss in the final game turning the season into an unequivocal failure.

“It is now time for change and a comprehensive reorganisation of football operations.”

The recruitment process for a replacement is ongoing. Talks have been held with former Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner over the role, while Spanish outlet Fichajes claim Amorim is also a candidate.

The latter has been out of work since being sacked at Manchester United in January, following an underwhelming 14 months in charge.

Amorim had arrived at Old Trafford regarded as one of the most promising young coaches in Europe. He led former side Sporting CP to two Primeira Liga titles, with the first ending a 19-year wait title drought.
