Two wins and one defeat was the record for Belgian Pro League sides in European competitions this week. All three sides remain in with a chance of making it to the next stage of their respective competitions, which is good news for the coefficient given the fact that this is one of the few seasons the the Pro League sides have not had close to full representation.
Union back to winning ways in the Champions League
Union St Gilloise put in a fantastic performance as they beat Galatasaray 1-0 away from home. A solitary goal from Promise David, who was very much involved in everything that was going on throughout the game, was enough to give David Hubert’s side a second victory in the competition. After a few humbling defeats to Inter, Newcastle and Atletico Madrid, this was the perfect response from the Brussels side. Union are now just one place (25th) outside of the qualification spots for the next round.
Club Brugge suffer in Lisbon
Club Brugge defended poorly as they were beaten 3-0 away from home against Sporting in the Portuguese capital. Club managed to have chances, but were far too open at the back and were punished by Sporting on three occasions. With Nordin Jackers now also out for six weeks, it was a costly night for the side in the Champions League. It was also a shame to follow up their entertaining and hard fought draw at home against Barcelona with a poor performance and defeat. Club now sit 26th in the Champions League table, two spots outside of the qualification places for the next round.
Genk march on in the Europa League
Genk grabbed another win in the Europa League, this time at home to Basel. The opening goal came from Hyun-Gyu Oh, his fourth in seven games in the Europa League. The second was an absolute blockbuster of a strike from young Greek wonderkid Konstatinos Karetsas just before half-time. Philip Otele pulled one back for the Swiss in the second half, but some fine goalkeeping from Hendrik van Crombrugge meant Genk took all three points. The Belgian Pro League side now sit ninth in the table, level on points with Porto and just outside of the automatic round of 16 qualification spots.
