Mourinho and Benfica aim to make Estádio da Luz intimidating

Since replacing Bruno Lage in September 2025, Mourinho has prioritised restoring an intimidating Estádio da Luz. According to Glorioso 1904, the numbers now back that ambition.

Benfica have played 13 home matches under him and lost only one, a 1-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen in the UEFA Champions League league phase. Mourinho felt it was harsh, settled by an unlucky moment that let Patrik Schick score.

There have been nine home wins, but three draws, against Rio Ave 1-1, Casa Pia 2-2 and Sporting 1-1, complicated the league campaign. The response has been six straight victories at home, part of an eight-match unbeaten stretch at the Luz.

That run includes notable European wins over Napoli 2-0 and Real Madrid 4-2, plus successes against Famalicão, Estoril, Estrela da Amadora and Alverca. Last season, their best home streak was five in a row.

Another big night awaits at the Estádio da Luz. Benfica face Real Madrid in the first leg of the Champions League play-off on 17 February at 20:00, with François Letexier appointed as referee.
