Even after his move to the MLS, Thomas Müller has not lost sight of FC Bayern. With the Vancouver Whitecaps, the 36-year-old advanced to the quarter-finals of the play-offs at the weekend with a dramatic 5-3 penalty shoot-out win at FC Dallas – and once again showed nerves of steel: Müller converted his team’s first penalty and was involved in the late equaliser in stoppage time.

Despite the time difference and the busy fixture list, contact with Munich remains close. In his personal newsletter, the ex-Bayern star spoke about the current form of his favourite club – and had nothing but words of praise.

„Despite the time difference, I continue to watch Bayern games as much as I can,“ Müller wrote. „On the one hand, because I’m deeply connected to FC Bayern in many ways. I still have a close relationship with the team. Secondly, to see where the bar is set in international football.“

The 2014 world champion is particularly enthusiastic about the record champions‘ current form: „FC Bayern is probably the hottest team in Europe at the moment. Not just in terms of results, but also in terms of performance. This dominant football is really fun to watch.“

He watched the Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund live – and was impressed by Munich’s performance: „The first half really showed every football fan what’s what.“

Müller on Harry Kane: „An all-round player“

Harry Kane also received an extra portion of praise from Müller: „I’m not surprised that he puts up such numbers. But the way he does it – defending as an all-round player, distributing the ball, finding steep passes – really impressive.“

Asked whether Kane is currently the best player in the world, Müller replied diplomatically, but with a clear bias: „I’m often asked whether he’s currently the best player in the world. In my football world, there is no such thing as the best player – too many factors play a role. But if there was a best player, he would be a very hot candidate at the moment.“

So even 8,300 kilometres away, Thomas Müller continues to follow what is happening at Säbener Straße with passion – and shows: once Bayern, always Bayern.
