Nathan Ake leaves Man City to join Fenerbahce

Fenerbahce have completed the signing of Nathan Ake from Manchester City in a deal worth up to £8.5m.

The Turkish club have paid around £7m upfront, with the remainder dependent on add-ons. It brings the curtain down on a trophy-laden six-year spell for the Netherlands defender.

His time at the Etihad was hugely decorated. Ake won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups, two League Cups and the Champions League. He was a reliable, versatile presence across the back line under Pep Guardiola.

The exit had been widely anticipated, though. Ake entered the final year of his contract and struggled for regular minutes in Guardiola’s last season. He made just 17 starts across all competitions, only six of them in the Premier League.

His departure fits a wider reshaping at the club. Director of football Hugo Viana has overseen significant change in defence as Enzo Maresca begins his rebuild. The modest fee reflects a priority of freeing wages and squad places over maximising income.

Ake left with a heartfelt tribute to the club. “It’s been a privilege to represent Manchester City over the past six years and I’m so grateful to have been part of a special team,” he said. “I’ve grown so much here, as a player and a person.”

He reserved particular fondness for the historic 2023 treble. “I’ll always cherish the memories, particularly of winning the Treble, being part of all four Premier League titles,” Ake added. “While I’m moving on, I’m very proud of everything we’ve achieved together.”

The 31-year-old joined City from Bournemouth for £40m in 2020, going on to make 177 appearances. He featured three times for the Netherlands at the World Cup before their last-32 exit to Morocco.
