Granted, the opposition were not great for England but you can only play what is ahead of you and you have to take all your chances to play some minutes and show what you can do, and both players certainly did that last night.

Jamie Gittens, who’s had a slow start to life as a Chelsea player, put in a fine performance last night and the stats and highlights reels show that, as well as his assist for the only goal of the game.

Pat Nevin feels that Chelsea will regret selling Noni Madueke and buying Gittens as well as Alejandro Garnacho instead, but I think that is a very hasty and wrong opinion and Gittens will need some time. They also weren’t even signed to replace Madueke, that’s what Estevao Willian is in here for, and I think he’s so much better than Madueke already!

Gittens needs time, and he needs games like last night to build his confidence and to get minutes and build momentum as well.

Carsley on Gittens and George

Jamie Gittens and Tyrique George in action for England U21s

England U21 manager Lee Carsley said after the game, in words picked up by SPTC:

“You always want to be a bit of a spark for the players to get them regular minutes and build confidence in them that they’ve got the durability to bang out minutes and Jamie [Gittens] is definitely in that bracket.”

“You saw tonight he’s very exciting, as is Josh King, and we’re very lucky to have Ethan Nwaneri on the other side.”

And on George

Carsley added on Tyrique George as a number 9:

“He’s got the profile and attributes to develop into a traditional number nine. A lot of that development I would imagine will go on at Chelsea, we have to adapt to that.

“He’s fast. He scores goals. He’s creative. He’s got good technique. But I could say that for a lot of players here.”
