Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has fired a response to rumours that he is a candidate for the Manchester United job.
United are about to kick off the process of appointing a new head coach after sacking Ruben Amorim on Monday morning.
The club released a statement, confirming they had parted ways with Amorim in an effort to give the team the best chance of finishing as high as possible in the Premier League table.
Reports have since emerged that Amorim fell out with the United hierarchy, most importantly director of football Jason Wilcox. It is understood that while Wilcox harboured reservations regarding Amorim’s tactical inflexibility, Amorim was simultaneously dissatisfied with United’s failure to fulfil early-January transfer assurances.
Darren Fletcher has been handed temporary control of the team as United look to bring in a new caretaker coach. Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have emerged as early contenders to assume the role.
United’s idea is to secure the services of a permanent replacement in the summer, having had sufficient time to comb through their options and settle on the ideal man.
A report covered by The Peoples Person relayed that Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner is a candidate for the Old Trafford hot seat.
But he is not the only one, with Gareth Southgate, Andoni Iraola, Enzo Maresca and Howe also mentioned.
Now, Howe has given his verdict on the rumours.
Asked if there is any truth to the whispers, Howe answered [as quoted by Hayters], “I’m absolutely [committed to Newcastle].”
“Nothing has changed from my perspective. I’m 100% here, working as hard as I can, head down, ignoring all the stuff that you guys write, whether it’s good or bad, because it’s irrelevant.”
“It’s about today’s work and trying to prepare the team as well as we can for Leeds. So, that will never change from my perspective.”
The 48-year-old continued, “I think my commitment to my work and my job, as long as I’m happy and able to express myself in the best way that I can to help the team, nothing will change.”
Howe has been at Newcastle for four years. On whether he’ll stick around for four more, he replied, “Four more games. You’ve got to keep hitting your objectives, you’ve got to keep hitting your targets, stage by stage.”
“If you’re able to and enjoying it and people want you to stay then you stay and you enjoy what’s to come. Four more years? I don’t know. Let’s just try and navigate through this season first.”
United are next in action on Wednesday when they go away to Burnley.
