Newcastle United are reportedly expecting to receive a formal bid from Liverpool for Alexander Isak in the summer transfer window.
The Reds made contact with the Tyneside outfit on Tuesday to “communicate their interest” in a potential £120 million deal, but were told the striker is not for sale.
It was suggested that Liverpool may shift focus to Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike, who is valued at around £87m and also a target for Newcastle.
However, Newcastle are “bracing themselves” for an official offer from Liverpool in the region of £130m, according to The Times.
The report claims that Isak‘s agent and Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe met at the club’s training ground last month. The Magpies had been “eager” to discuss a new deal for the Sweden international to make him the best-paid player in the club’s history.
Isak’s agent paused talks on a new contract last season. He still has three years to run on his deal, which sees him earn around a weekly wage of £120,000.
Newcastle’s recent interest in Ekitike suggests they do not expect their star player to renew terms and could be preparing for a possible future without him.
The club have reportedly submitted an offer worth £70m, which would eclipse the club-record transfer fee they paid Real Sociedad for Isak in 2022, but Frankfurt have rejected it as they feel other clubs are willing to pay more for Ekitike.
The 23-year-old is one of the most in-demand forwards on the market right now. He scored 15 goals and provided eight assists in the Bundesliga last season to help the German outfit qualify for the UEFA Champions League for just the second time in their history. He also registered 11 goal involvements in the Europa League and DFB-Pokal.
