The 27-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of June, and there is no extension in sight, making him one of the most appealing free agents on the summer market.
Having already lost Kieran Trippier, Eddie Howe is eager to add tactical flexibility and reliable depth to his backline, which is a key factor driving Newcastle’s quest to bring Mingueza to St James’ Park.
Mingueza, who spent four seasons at Celta Vigo after progressing through Barcelona’s famed academy La Masia, boasts a highly adaptable profile.
The ‘wonderful’ defender is comfortable as a traditional right-back, a modern wing-back, or as a ball-playing centre-half. Financially, a deal for Mingueza would be a shrewd piece of business.
With strict Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) limiting spending, signing an experienced La Liga defender without a transfer fee is a major advantage for a team without the added revenue of European football.
Mingueza is reportedly eager to test himself in the Premier League, but with no transfer fee involved, his representatives are likely to receive several lucrative contract offers from across Europe.
For Newcastle, moving quickly to establish terms will be crucial to avoid losing out to other interested clubs, including Arsenal and Aston Villa.
Newcastle have already signed Ewen Jaouen this summer and are close to finalising a deal for Victor Munoz.
The Magpies endured a difficult 2025/26 campaign but will be optimistic about bouncing back next season.
