Newcastle United Women reveal Tyne-Wear derby will be held at St. James’ Park | OneFootball

Newcastle United Women have revealed that they will return to St. James’ Park for the Tyne-Wear derby with Sunderland next month.

The Magpies are set to face their rivals in a Women’s Super League 2 clash on Sunday, November 16th.

Newcastle play the majority of their games at the Gateshead International Stadium.

However, the Tyne-Wear derby is always a special occasion, and Newcastle have decided to bring the game to their home stadium.

Newcastle aim to host the biggest derby of the weekend at St. James’ Park

Newcastle vs Sunderland at St. James’ Park takes place on the same weekend as the Manchester and north London derbies.

In their announcement, the Magpies said they aim to host the biggest women’s derby of the weekend.

The Tyne-Wear derby was also held at St. James’ Park last season, which saw a record 38,502 fans in attendance.

Newcastle went on to win that match thanks to a late Shania Hayles goal.

Magpies head coach Becky Langley in the club’s announcement said: “We can’t wait to return to St. James’ Park as it’s always a such a special occasion. We have already made many memories here and aim to create even more history, both on the pitch and in the stands.

“The noise that the Geordies created last season was unforgettable. We broke the league’s attendance record, and we want to go even bigger this time.

“We all know that this will be a fiercely competitive game, with local pride at stake, and the supporters can give us that extra edge.”

Newcastle and Sunderland’s promotion chances

Newcastle and Sunderland will be hoping to get promoted to the expanded Women’s Super League for the 2026-27 season.

At least two sides will be promoted, while the side that finishes third will face a playoff with the bottom team in the WSL to decide who plays in the top-flight.

Sunderland are unbeaten over their opening four games with two wins and two draws, sitting third behind Birmingham City and Charlton Athletic.

Newcastle have found life tougher with just one win in four games, and sit ninth in the WSL 2 standings.

The Magpies will hope to pick up a big win on the road on Sunday when they face Crystal Palace. Sunderland could jump into the automatic promotion spots if they beat Charlton.

Both sides though will be eagerly looking forward to the clash at St. James Park in November.
