Newcastle vs Man Utd - LIVE

OneFootball Videos

A full slate of midweek Premier League action continues on Wednesday night with Michael Carrick’s high-flying Red Devils taking on Eddie Howe’s free-falling Magpies at St James’ Park.

These two sides were level on points when Carrick took over from Ruben Amorim, but six wins from seven outings since then have seen United rise to third in the table. Meanwhile, injuries and a heavy multi-competition fixture schedule look to be catching up with Newcastle, who have slipped to 13th and are 15 points adrift of today’s opponent before kick-off.

For Tyneside native Carrick, this presents a chance to solidify both United’s hopes of a return to Champions League football and his own chances of earning the top job on a permanent basis in the summer. For Howe, a flawless record in this fixture is on the line, as is the opportunity to stop a disappointing campaign from getting worse. Follow the action LIVE below with our dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis.

Howe pre-match

Some pre-match comments from Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, who is hoping to avoid a fourth successive Premier League home defeat: "The team we have is a very good team, but we need to defend better collectively, and that is on us as a whole team.

"We have been slightly unlucky with injuries, that is tough for any team to absorb, especially when you are playing every three days.

"We have been put in a position where we haven’t had the luxury to rotate which has impacted our performances."

Red Devils on arrival

Bruno the creative king

We’ll soon find out if Bruno Fernandes can add to his impressive assist tally today...

United’s skipper has set up 13 Premier League goals already in 2025/26, the most of any player in the top flight.

With two more he’ll equal the single-season record for the Red Devils, and with seven more - across his 10 remaining matches - he would equal the single-season record for the entire division.

Fan thoughts: Pope dropped, Gordon up top

Among the home fans, meanwhile, there seems to be some support of Eddie Howe’s decision to bench Nick Pope - who had a poor game, not for the first time this season, against Everton last time out - in favour of Aaron Ramsdale.

Anthony Gordon, meanwhile, has struggled for output in the Premier League for a while now, despite his prolific season in the Champions League, yet is named up front for Newcastle with Yoane Wissa left on the bench.

Fan thoughts: Dalot benching

Is this harsh on Diogo Dalot?

He has racked up a few goal involvements, the Portuguese, but Michael Carrick has elected to give Noussair Mazraoui has first start since before the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Not every United fan is happy with Carrick’s change, it seems...

Team news reaction

That’s two changes for Newcastle from Sunday’s 3-2 home defeat against Everton, then.

Nick Pope drops out, replaced in goal by Aaron Ramsdale, while Harvey Barnes fills in for club-record signing Nick Woltemade, who is ruled out through illness.

Anthony Gordon - the Magpies’ leading Champions League goal-scorer - appears to be the likeliest man to lead the line, given natural frontman Yoane Wissa is on the bench.

Newcastle XI: Ramsdale; Trippier, Thiaw, Burn, Hall; Ramsey, Tonali, Joelinton; Elanga, Gordon, Barnes

As for United, there’s just one change from the 2-1 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday.

It sees Diogo Dalot replaced at right-back by Noussair Mazraoui, who makes his first start since December.

Veteran backlinesmen Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire are fit despite questions marks over their availability, while 18-year-old defender Godwill Kukonki makes the bench and Benjamin Sesko remains in the starting line-up, as expected.

Man Utd XI: Lammens; Mazraoui, Yoro, Maguire, Shaw; Casemiro, Mainoo; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Cunha; Sesko
