Fabrizio Romano has poured cold water over the prospect of Carlo Ancelotti taking over as Manchester United manager in the summer.
Likewise, fellow former Premier League boss Thomas Tuchel can be discounted as a potential candidate to replace Michael Carrick.

And this is all assuming that the 44-year-old won’t be considered as an ideal option to take the Red Devils forward into the 2026/27 season.

United-linked Ancelotti is nearing a new contract with the Brazilian national team ahead of the impending summer World Cup.
“Carlo Ancelotti remains in advanced talks with the Brazilian federation to sign a new contract,” Romano spoke on his eponymous YouTube channel.
“It’s not until 2028, it will be until 2030 (until the next World Cup). Imagine how happy he can be with Brazil, and how happy the Brazilian federation is with Ancelotti.
“So, no contacts underway between Manchester United and Ancelotti. No contacts between Manchester United and Tuchel. They are both expected to continue with their national teams.”
The deal would see the ex-Real Madrid boss lead Brazil to the next Copa America in 2028 and right up to the following World Cup.
As such, it leaves United with two fewer world-class options to take over the role.

As far as raw merit is concerned, Carrick hasn’t failed to impress during his so far short stint as Manchester United head coach.
The Champions League hopefuls may very well have suffered a disappointing defeat to Newcastle United at St James’ Park, but few can argue with the turnaround since Ruben Amorim’s departure.
Six wins in eight games (including over title challengers Arsenal and Manchester City), leaving United ahead of Aston Villa (on goal difference) in third place.
In the eyes of many a fan, that would be enough to at least put Michael Carrick’s name up for consideration ahead of the summer.
And, as far as the odds are concerned, he’s currently the most likely option to be sitting in the dugout come the start of the 2026/27 campaign.

Not that we’re ones to put total faith in the odds without question here at Stretty News.
However, looking at some of the names on the list, we’re not totally convinced that there’s a clear favourite – other than, perhaps, Luis Enrique – in terms of who we feel would be well-suited to the challenge.
