FC Bayern were held to a 2-2 draw by Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga’s top match. After going behind early on, the record champions turned the game around after the break, but were unable to defend their lead at the Volksparkstadion and ultimately had to settle for a point.

After their first defeat of the season against FC Augsburg on the previous matchday, the Munich side were unable to get back to winning ways in Hamburg. The hosts got off to a strong start and put the league leaders under pressure early on. Bayern found it difficult to settle into their game, while HSV kept switching dangerously.

After around half an hour, the home side’s commitment was rewarded: Following a foul by Joshua Kimmich on Nicolai Remberg, referee Harm Osmers pointed to the spot and Fábio Vieira kept his cool to convert the spot-kick into the left corner for a deserved 1:0.

Munich needed some time to get going, but improved in the closing stages of the first half. Kimmich hit the crossbar with a long-range shot, and Lennart Karl missed from close range shortly afterwards. The equalizer came shortly before the break: Josip Stanišić played a strong through ball to Serge Gnabry, whose cross was headed under the crossbar by Harry Kane from four metres out to make it 1-1. The teams went into the half-time break with the scores level.

Bayern got off to a perfect start after the break. With the first attack of the second half, Michael Olise played a one-two with Gnabry and sent Luis Díaz on his way, who held his nerve in front of Heuer Fernandes and slotted home after just 44 seconds to take a 2-1 lead.

However, HSV were unimpressed and came back again. The hosts remained courageous, continued to play forward and were rewarded in the 53rd minute: William Mikelbrencis broke through on the left and crossed accurately into the penalty area, where Luka Vušković rose highest between Gnabry and Alphonso Davies to equalize with a header to make it 2:2.

An intense and increasingly heated match ensued. Bayern had more possession, but rarely found clear solutions against Hamburg, who defended passionately. Vincent Kompany reacted with changes, bringing on Jamal Musiala and Jonathan Tah, among others. The record champions had the best opportunity to regain the lead in the 65th minute when Dayot Upamecano got the ball to his shoulder in a scramble after a corner and it bounced against the post.

Hectic 9 minutes of stoppage time

The final phase was particularly dangerous in front of the Munich goal. HSV had several promising counter-attacks and were even closer to scoring the winner at times. Hamburg missed their best chance in the 74th minute when Alphonso Davies made a spectacular save on the line after a quick clearance from Heuer Fernandes and prevented Fábio Vieira from finishing in front of the empty goal.

Bayern threw everything forward once more in the final minutes, with nine minutes of added time adding to the drama. Musiala forced Heuer Fernandes into a brilliant save with a deflected shot from distance, and shortly afterwards Munich claimed a penalty after a shot from Kimmich. The VAR reviewed the scene, but correctly ruled that Daniel Elfadli had initially hit the ball with his chest.

The final phase was characterized by many interruptions, yellow cards and numerous Bayern crosses, which Heuer Fernandes repeatedly defused with his fist. Despite the late push, the record champions were unable to score another goal. Osmers finally blew the final whistle after a total of eleven minutes of stoppage time.

The draw means FC Bayern remain top of the Bundesliga with 51 points, nine points ahead of Borussia Dortmund. BVB can close the gap at home to Heidenheim on Sunday. Hamburger SV remain in 13th place with 19 points and the point win gives them some breathing space in the relegation battle. Munich continue their campaign next Sunday with a home game against Hoffenheim, while HSV are away to Heidenheim on Saturday.
