Niko Kovac concedes Borussia Dortmund were ‘lucky’ to receive last-second penalty against St. Pauli | OneFootball

Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac has admitted the role of “Lady Luck” in his side’s narrow Saturday afternoon Bundesliga win over St. Pauli. Both Kovac and St. Pauli head coach Alexander Blessin naturally had to weigh in on the controversial penalty call that enabled BVB to eke out a 2-1 win.

Blessin aggravated, Kovac concedes the point

“Someone needs to show me whether [the Ricky Jade Jones foul on Maximilian Beier] was on the [penalty box] line or not,” Blessin growled at the post-match press conference. “I haven’t seen any camera angle that proves it conclusively.“

“I’m the lucky one today,” Kovac said when it was his turn to speak. “If I were in his [Blessin’s] shoes, I would see it the same way. I can’t tell you whether in was in or out. I’m surprised VAR intervened. That’s just how it goes these days.

“Today, it broke our way,” Kovac concluded. “In Frankfurt [last Friday night], it went the other way. Unfortunately, that’s just the way it is.“
