Lothar Matthäus has sent Jamal Musiala a clear message. After his long slump and the first few months following his comeback, the record-holding national team player now believes the Bayern star has a responsibility to step up. In his view, there are no more excuses.

Jamal Musiala looks back on some difficult months. After his serious injury, the FC Bayern attacker fought his way back onto the field with a great deal of patience. Although the national team player showed promising signs again toward the end of last season and also at the World Cup, he has not yet fully regained his former ease.

For Lothar Matthäus, the time has now come for Musiala to finally take the next step.

In his column for Sky, the former Bayern captain made it clear that the injury should no longer be a factor.

Matthäus: Musiala must put the injury behind him

“What’s next for Jamal Musiala? At some point, the serious injury he sustained over a year ago has to be behind him. He needs to finally put it out of his mind,” Matthäus wrote.

The 65-year-old is convinced that the mental aspect, above all, will now be decisive. “That’s very important right now; otherwise, he’ll likely spend a lot of games on the bench due to the fierce competition,” warned the Sky expert.

Competition at FC Bayern is fierce

In fact, the competition for spots in the record champion’s offense has intensified once again.

Serge Gnabry has recently impressed playing alongside Harry Kane and has earned himself more playing time. Added to that are Michael Olise and super-talent Lennart Karl, both of whom can also play in the number 10 position.

For Vincent Kompany, this means a comfortable starting position. The Bayern coach has several options for the key attacking positions and can react flexibly to form and the opponent.

Matthäus does acknowledge that Musiala has made progress recently. Positive developments were evident both at FC Bayern and during the World Cup.

“Musiala showed promise at Bayern toward the end of the season, and there were also promising moments at the World Cup,” explained the all-time leading German international.

At the same time, he made it clear that this level of play will no longer be enough in the future.

“But there are no more excuses now,” Matthäus concluded unequivocally.

For Musiala, this marks the start of a pivotal season. After a long injury and a difficult return to the field, FC Bayern also expects the attacking star to regain his top form. Given the high quality of the squad, the 23-year-old will have to work his way back into the starting lineup.

Musiala undoubtedly has what it takes to do so. Now it’s up to him to consistently meet those expectations on the field.
