Nottingham Forest are close to agreeing a loan with Napoli for striker Lorenzo Lucca.

Personal terms are also close. The move would include an option to buy at around €40million, the fee Napoli paid Udinese.

Lucca, 25, is on loan at the Italian champions from the 10th-placed club and has scored once in 16 league games this season.

Forest have been seeking a striker in this window, with last season’s top scorer Chris Wood sidelined by a knee injury. The Nottingham side are 17th, one place above the drop, and have scored nine fewer goals than Leeds United in 16th.

They also allowed Arnaud Kalimuendo, a £26million signing from Rennes, to join Frankfurt on loan earlier this month. The 23-year-old has a goal and an assist in his first three Bundesliga matches.

The Lucca move is not expected to affect plans for Mehdi Taremi, who is viewed as stylistically similar to Wood.

Lucca joined Napoli on a season-long loan last summer as one of nine arrivals to Antonio Conte’s squad. Napoli are third after 21 games, and he has started four of them.
