Nottingham Forest missed a chance to pull clear of trouble with a 2-1 defeat at Brighton, undone by early defensive lapses despite Morgan Gibbs-White’s superb equaliser.

Brighton struck inside six minutes after Neco Williams twice failed to clear and Diego Gomez beat Matz Sels from a tight angle. Nottingham Post’s player ratings handed Gibbs-White 7/10 and Williams 4/10, with Sels given 6.5/10.

Seven minutes later Gibbs-White levelled from range after a neat pass from Igor Jesus. Danny Welbeck restored the hosts’ lead on the quarter-hour with a shot on the turn.

Forest were ragged before the break and could have fallen further behind. Sels denied Kaoru Mitoma, Mats Wieffer and Jack Hinshelwood, and Welbeck went close.

With little improvement, Vitor Pereira switched to a back three before the hour. The change steadied the visitors but clear chances remained scarce.

Taiwo Awoniyi headed narrowly wide late on as Forest pushed for another equaliser. Other ratings saw Nikola Milenkovic at 6/10, Ola Aina, Ibrahim Sangare, Omari Hutchinson, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Igor Jesus at 5/10, and Murillo 4.5/10.

From the bench, Luca Netz and Jair Cunha were each 6/10, Dilane Bakwa and Dan Ndoye 5/10, and Awoniyi 6/10. The Reds now juggle a Europa League last-16 run with the fight to secure Premier League safety.
