Armando Broja has left Chelsea and joined Burnley on a permanent deal, the club have just announced on their official website.
Broja is an academy product who joined Chelsea as an under 9. He wasn’t considered one of the real gems in the academy until a really impressive loan to Vitesse put him on the radar. He looked good at Southampton in the Premier League the year after that, but injuries killed his chances of breaking into our first team.
He struggled for form and fitness on loan at Everton last year too, and it’s been clear for a while that a fresh start somewhere he can play every week is what he needs.
The fee we’ve got from Burnley isn’t official, but the well connected Ben Jacobs is claiming that it’s “up to £20m.”
That’s a hefty sum for a player who hasn’t been able to consistently stay fit, so we would imagine a large chunk of that is based in performance based bonuses.
The departure of Broja ticks another box on the long list of sales the Blues need to make this summer. There are still plenty left to go, but with 3 weeks left in the window the club’s sporting directors are surely pretty happy with how things are going on that front.
For Armando’s sake, we hope he does well at Burnley. He’s a great kid and a true Chelsea lad who had been so unlucky with injuries. He’s still just 23, and can potentially have a great career at the top level if things start to go his way a little more.
It won’t be easy battling for points with Burnley, but we believe he (and fellow summer signing from Chelsea Lesley Ugochukwu) can make a huge difference for Scott Parker’s team.
Good luck, Armando!
