Official EFL announcement – Carabao Cup Round Four draw confirmed – 24 September 2025:
Carabao Cup holders Newcastle to debut new gold sleeve badge on return to competition
As Round Three of the Carabao Cup concludes tonight, Newcastle United return to action in the competition, six months on from their historic triumph at Wembley last season.
To mark 65 years of the iconic competition, the EFL has revealed a special update to the sleeve badges designed to honour the history of the Cup and recognise the Magpies’ historic victory under the arch.
The new sleeve badges, in Carabao’s familiar green, will now include a nod to the number of times each Club has won the competition.
However, as the holders, Newcastle will also wear the very first Carabao Cup gold badge, featuring the number one.
Eddie Howe’s men get their defence underway against 2013 finalists Bradford City at St James’ Park on Wednesday, with the Newcastle boss eager for another good run in a competition that brought so much joy last season.
Speaking to the Club in his pre-match press conference, Howe said: “The experiences we’ve been through in the competition, not just last year but two seasons ago, were memorable to say the least. They’re some of my strongest memories.
“The whole experience of the competition is a great one, and because you go into it early in the season, it has a freshness to it. We’re up against tough opponents.
“They’re doing very well in their league, are on a strong winning run and have beaten two Championship teams [Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City] to get to this point.”
He admitted that entering as holders felt extra special, but wasn’t naive about how tough the early rounds can prove to be.
How added: “It’s got a nice feel about it. It’s something we acknowledge, and we want to respect that by trying to do our best to go on another good run.
“As we found last year, the early rounds are very difficult. We played Wimbledon, a 1-0 win, and it was a tough game. It was the same two years ago when we squeezed through against Tranmere and we fully respect every opponent.
