Pierre Ekwah (24) has left AS Saint-Étienne to join EFL Championship club Watford until the end of the season.

The former Sunderland had been refusing to play for Saint-Étienne this season, ever since his move to Les Verts was made permanent, despite the club’s relegation to Ligue 2. Amid a dispute with ASSE, he has not even been training with the first team in recent months, but he is now set for a move away.

Watford reached an agreement with Saint-Étienne regarding the midfielder’s transfer on transfer deadline day. The Hornets completed the deal at the last minute, notably beating competition from fellow Championship club Leicester City, as well as Levante in Spain.

The Frenchman joins initially on a loan deal, however, according to a report from Foot Mercato, the Championship club have the option to make the switch permanent at the end of the current season for a fee of €7.5m.
